Pretoria – Cape Town has gained R1.27 billion from spending from more than 108 384 football tourists who visited the city during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Presenting his 2010/2011 annual report to the Western Cape Legislature’s Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Development on Friday, Cape Town Routes Unlimited (CTRU) CEO Calvyn Gilfellan announced that Gauteng had won the title for drawing the most football tourists, while the Western Cape ended second on the league table representing the South African cities that had hosted the tournament. Cape Town Tourism cautions against alarmist statements about a tourism crisis. “We are in the middle of winter, traditionally a very tough time for the tourism sector in Cape Town.  This is reflected in the low occupancy levels currently experienced by the majority of the industry. The increased supply, decreased demand and lingering recession add to the challenges the tourism sector faces,” says Cape Town Tourism CEO, Mariëtte du-Toit Helmbold. There are signs of recovery, albeit at a slow rate of 3-4%, which will mean that recovery could take significantly longer than initially anticipated unless we change tactics.” [Read more…]
