The Rugby World Cup, an amazing achievement

An amazing tournament with South Africa crowned as World Champions, it couldn't have been better or could it? For some reason certain elements reminded me of when a little kid plonked a stone onto our daughter's head and the boy's mother made out it was due to our daughter not making him feel welcome and so the bottom line is that it was our fault.

Well, that is what 'some' of the British press attempted to do before the World Cup Final and after South Africa had won the WC. We needed to feel guilt for winning the WC due to our past. Whereas I wasn't a great supporter of the 1995 WC winning team, I certainly was of the 2007 team. In 1995, the management and team were somewhat arrogant and said things that were plain uncomfortable. Some behaviour was boorish to the extent of the 'Spitting Image' video that popped up or should I say re-emerged before the WC final. However, I do have to chortle at the English and their selective memory, particularly when it comes to racism and social living and a divided society.

Contrary to the World's belief, segregation was instilled in South Africa long before the Nationalist Party came to rule South Africa, 'apartheid' is still no excuse. The plain absurdity of the UK press even mentioning who plays rugby in South Africa without looking at who actually plays rugby and cricket in England, certainly does highlight the blindness. Football or soccer as it is known as in South Africa, is a working class game in the UK whereas rugby and cricket is a little more elitist and is often reserved for those with a better education and from a better background certainly not for those from a 'council estate'

The irony of some of the newspaper articles I have read and the comments made certainly drift away from the simple facts of what is taking place on their little island, a brewing cauldron of racial hatred and social division which is so established that the people refer to themselves as working class (despite the Govt's attempt to say it doesn't exist). And yet they want to dictate on how it's done to other countries. Firstly, how about sorting Zimbabwe, considering the right mess you made of that? I don't want to mention how multi-national companies are responsible for a great deal of the mess that has taken place in Africa.

Through this all, I come back to the point of South Africa's rugby supporters having to feel guilty for their team winning the Rugby World Cup while the press of the UK choose to neglect their own country's short comings in its own history and current domestic situation, let's not mention Iraq or the bombings that have taken place perpetrated by their own citizens.

Only once in my life have I had a black youth say to me that he hates whites and that was in that glorious country Britain. My suggestion to the mud island is "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones"

To end it all,

Congratulations South Africa on winning the World Cup
