So Christmas is over and the celebrations have stopped, people the world over, have stuffed themselves full of their Turkey or whatever it is they have at Christmas time and copious quantities of alcohol consumed. Expensive gifts have changed hands, sometimes appreciated, sometimes not. Families have come together and had a good time and others have had arguments.
Meanwhile, in third world countries where poverty and war are tearing nations apart, this day would have seemed just like any other, a constant battle for survival.
This is supposed to be a religious occasion at which we should give thanks and remember those far less fortunate than ourselves, but this is regularly forgotten amidst all of the festivities.
People should not need to starve in this world, if only countries could agree on policies that create a greater sharing of resources, with a reduction in the millions of tonnes of food wasted each year.
Poorer countries need help in creating sustainable agriculture suitable to their environments and the stronger powers must act, instead of looking the other way, when rogue governments effectively starve their own people by stealing or destroying resources, of failing to develop them.
As the Christmas song says, ''we can feed the world'', but we need the political and moral will to do so - an idealistic belief for which he has been feted by some and ridiculed by others.
But it is true and though some nations must also be taught to help themselves, the seemingly impossible could actually be achieved.
It is a task that would require countries setting aside their differences, however severe and agreeing that food and water security for all is in all our interests.
Now, it isn't even called Christmas by many who would like to bring their own agenda to the party. It has become Xmas, or Crimbo as I have heard more and more this year.
It's all a dream I know, as power hungry politicians and dictators will always have only one interest at heart, namely themselves. I bet mad Bob did not go hungry this year!!!!
