If you don't often travel, make sure you let your credit card company know that you'll be travelling in South Africa (or whatever place you're going to) before you go.
A friend had their card blocked when they used it as the company thought it had been stolen, and that the thieves were using it in another country. Their housesitters had a call from the card company asking if they were away and they had to phone their card company and have it unblocked, and assure them it was legit. True!

2. Tie a brightly coloured ribbon or something on your case so you can identify it on the baggage carousel.

If possible have your luggage -'cling wrapped'.
I have huge, very bright, pom-poms which I tie to all my luggage
