british citizenship through mother

hi, I am trying to get some information for a person in south africa. She is a british citizen (born in the uk). She was born in 1958. She has a daughter that was born in 1991 (15 years old ) and she wants information on getting a british passport for her daughter. AT the moment she is finding it hard to get any info from the british consulate in south africa, so has emailed me to find out what she will need to do etc....
please help if possible

Caroline, I understand that the mother is a British Citizen by birth. Her daughter was born after the 1982 when the British Nationality act provided for automatic transmission by a UK born Mother to their children.

As your friends daughter was born in 1991, she is automatically a British Citizen by descent. She may apply for a British passport in the usual way. (The daughter fills in the application form and provides her full length birth certificate along with her Mothers UK birth certificate to prove her entitlement.) There should be no problems.

SA South Africans can nationalize through mothers birth in UK

As of March 2010, South Africans can nationalize for British citizenship if their mothers were born in the UK.

To be eligible for this criteria, you have to be born after 7 February 1961 but before 1 January 1983.

If you want to find out if you are eligible, reply to this post and I can definitely help you.
