Habitat City launches major staff recruitment drive

IN a bid to improve service delivery, the City of Cape Town has launched the first phase of a major recruitment drive to employ hundreds of skilled managers, professionals and technicians.

During the next week the municipality is to advertise 202 key posts, including 99 for engineers and 31 for project managers.

"The City is inviting applications from across the board, from those in retirement or near-retirement, those in mid-career, or those who are fresh out of college," says Cllr Belinda Walker, Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services and Human Resources.

"The placement of staff is not confined to senior posts. We are also filling vacancies lower down in the organisation," she says.

At least 1 700 posts are to be filled, with a strong focus on staffing the utilities department, which includes electricity, water and sanitation services, and the safety and security departments, including fire services.

An initial 1 780 critical posts in key service delivery areas have been filled in the past year.

"The City urgently needs staff for key projects such as the 2010 stadium and supporting infrastructure, N2 Gateway bulk infrastructure, informal settlement upgrades, major roads, wastewater treatment works upgrades, and stadiums, sports fields and multi-purpose areas," says Cllr Walker.

"We are looking for project managers to be involved in lead projects within the areas of human settlements, water services, electricity, waste, parks & recreation, transport, roads, social and economic development, and 2010-related projects.

"We are looking for professionals and technicians with qualifications or background in architecture, building science, civil engineering, electrical engineering, environmental planning, landscape architecture, quantity surveying, structural engineering, transport/traffic engineering and urban design," she says.
