Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity’s reply to the hundreds of South Africans across the country who responded to their call to join them in their quest to build 67 houses across South Africa in their International Nelson Mandela Build last week – the houses all being built in honour and to commemorate “International Nelson Mandela Day on the 18th July.

“We asked South Africans to join us in helping fellow South Africans in need and we received a resounding response! Although we didn’t quite reach our target of 67 houses, 34 families across our country now have a place they can call home said Adrienne Burke, Habitat’s National Marketing & Communications Officer.

I am grateful to Habitat for Humanity South Africa for giving me hope” “I have lived in a shack all my life, I had already given up hope after I lost my husband that one day I will live in a brick and mortar house said Mrs Anna Nanki Nhlapo one of the beneficiaries in Orange Farm receiving a home this past week.

In Orange Farm Gauteng, 25 homes built in partnership with Habitat and 14 different corporate companies were handed over at Habitat’s official handover ceremony on Friday 20 July attended by the Minister of Human Settlements, Mr Tokyo Sexwale and various dignitaries from the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, SABC and Habitat for Humanity.

“We will be building on this next year and our objective with the help from all South Africans is to build 67 houses in each province said Burke – the support and sentiment being echoed by both the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory and SABC current partners in this year’s build initiative.
