Mbombela - Tomorrow is the last day for Mpumalanga matrics to apply for bursaries so they can further their education next year.
The Mpumalanga Provincial Government Bursary Scheme is offering the bursaries to matriculants from poor homes.
“The department calls on all Grade 12 learners who need financial assistance to further their studies at any university within our country to apply for bursaries for the 2014 academic year before the closing date," said Jasper Zwane, spokesperson for the provincial education department, which administers the bursary scheme.
Applicants have to complete a bursary application form that is accessible at the provincial government complex at Riverside in Mbombela or any regional education department office.
Applications can also be made online on the department's website: mpumalanga.gov.za/education
Zwane said the bursaries are available for all fields of study. "Aspiring doctors, engineers and more are asked to apply,†said Zwane.
Applicants must provide certified copies of their Grade 12 mid-year results if currently in Grade 12 or their final Grade 12 certificate, as well as proof of residence in Mpumalanga, a letter or provisional letter of acceptance or proof of registration from a higher education institution.
They must also provide a certified copy of their South African Identity Document, proof of income of their parent or guardian, proof of disability from a registered medical doctor or clinic/hospital (if applicable) and/or proof of indigent status.
“Learners are also encouraged to take advantage of other opportunities provided by government to assist them to obtain a university qualification such as the Fundza Lushaka Bursary Fund and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme,†said Zwane. – SAnews.gov.za

Police nab 115 illegal miners |

Johannesburg – Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu says police have arrested 115 illegal miners in and around Roodeport in the past two months.
Speaking to journalists before meeting with residents in the area, Shabangu said since she first led police raids in the area in July, the action has also caused crime to decrease notably in communities where the illegal activities are carried out.
Shabangu said most of those that were arrested were foreign nationals, and that 15 of them had already appeared in court.
“Progress has been made since we were here the last time. I can say that while there are still challenges, we have seen many people being arrested,†Shabangu said.
She attributed the arrests to cooperation from residents, who, through the community policing forums, helped law-enforcement agencies to identify those who illegally mined gold from mine dumps that had been abandoned by mining companies in the area after they were shut down.
When Shabangu first came into the area just over two months ago, she said she would lobby local government officials to get the land where mine dumps to be used for other projects like the construction of low-cost housing and parks. She also instructed law-enforcement agencies to prioritise clamping down on illegal activities on mine dumps.
At the time, Shabangu said illegal mining was a threat to the economy, with a 2010 study finding that R6 billion was being lost to illegal mining annually, and that it could be more today.
She said mining companies had presented a plan of how they intend to process mine dumps to ensure that illegal mining on those sites will be impossible in the future. – SAnews.gov.za

Integrated effort needed to achieve MDGs |

Pretoria - While acknowledging progress in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) over the past decade, South Africa says there are still gaps and unevenness in achieving these development goals.
Speaking at the UN headquarters in New York, President Jacob Zuma said strengthening the Global Partnership for Development and building on the existing commitments was crucial to achieving development post the 2015 deadline.
He identified the right to development as a key to strengthening the Global Partnership to achieve the MDGs.
The right to development provides an integrated, holistic and cohesive framework for achieving just and equitable development for all, including the attainment of human dignity and equality.
It is also a guide for development in the areas of development aid, trade liberalisation, investment promotion, market access and debt relief, and will thus provide States with a better chance of attaining the MDGs.
Zuma was of the view that the Post-2015 Development Agenda must be guided by the spirit of equality, mutual trust, inclusiveness and universality.
“The eradication of poverty and hunger, as well as combatting inequality at all levels must be at the centre stage of the development agenda. The post-2015 development should also be cognisant of the different countries' conditions and their respective development stages,†said the President.
Accordingly, the Global Development Partnership must adhere to the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilitiesâ€, Zuma said, reaffirming the importance of an appropriate balance and level of integration between inclusive economic growth, social development and environmental sustainability.
Additionally, the Post-2015 Development Agenda, Zuma said, must take into account regional priorities and existing continent-wide initiatives.
Zuma said support for Africa's socio-economic blueprint, the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), should be strengthened. – SAnews.gov.za

NW youth to study medicine in Cuba |

About 180 youth from disadvantaged backgrounds in North West have been awarded bursaries to study medicine in Cuba this year.
This is a drastic improvement from 100 that was recruited in 2012.
The recruitment process of 180 students, who depart for Cuba in October, was highly competitive.
Candidates according to the provincial department were selected on the basis of academic excellence and commitment to serve the poorest communities upon completion of their studies.
Other criteria included a history of active involvement in their communities, and the potential to be a dedicated and caring doctor.
The province continues to see steady progress in addressing related challenges of scarce skills and training of health professionals, says Health MEC Magome Masike.
“Through the South African and Cuban Medical Programme, more and more medical professionals become available. The availability of extra doctors means more and more communities, especially in rural areas where most of them come from are able to be seen and treated by doctors,†says Masike.
Masike says the shortage of medical professionals is a national problem but affects the poor and rural population the most.
“Through the South Africa and Cuba Medical Programme, more and more medical professionals become available and this slowly but surely, reduces doctor patient contact in health facilities mainly serving rural communities,†the MEC said.
Currently, the province has 72 medical students from poor backgrounds who successfully completed their medical studies and are now serving their communities since inception of South Africa Cuba Medical programme in 1995. – SAnews.gov.za
