One of Johnny Clegg’s backing vocalists has been shot and killed during a robbery in Troyeville, Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Sunday.
Bongani Masuku was killed on Saturday night in Princess street, said Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale. Four men approached Masuku as he was parking his car and demanded a cellphone and his car keys at gun point. Mogale said the struggle ensued and one of the men shot him several times.
The men then got into a minibus and sped off. “The deceased then managed to drive himself to a nearby fire station where he collapsed and died.â€
Police were investigating a case of murder.
On his official website, Clegg said they were shocked and saddened by Masuku’s killing. “We will miss him deeply and we extend our heart felt condolences to his family and all who knew him.â€
Clegg described him as a stalwart performer, a hard-working musician and a good friend. Masuku began working with Clegg in 1992.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga and teacher unions have strongly condemned the selling of posts in the education sector.
The minister met union leaders on Friday as part of a consultative process. This week she is expected to meet school governing body associations to outline her plans regarding the investigation.
She emphasised that the practice of selling posts, if true, would not go unpunished as it was a form of corruption and against the law.
In recent weeks, there have been reports in the media alleging collusion between certain education officials and stakeholders, including certain individuals in the selling of posts.
The unions represented were the National Teachers’ Union (Natu), National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa), South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu), Professional Educators’ Union (PEU), and the Suid-Afrikaanse Onderwysersunie (SAOU).
In the meeting, the minister announced that she would set up a Ministerial Task Team to investigate the alleged selling of posts in the education sector. The unions and the Ministry agreed that the matter be dealt with urgently.
The task team will be an independent body and would be constituted by Public Service Commission, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, Department of Basic Education as well as external independent education experts, human resources and legal experts.
The names of the members of the investigating team will be announced once the terms of reference have been finalised.
People who want to report any incidents of selling of posts are advised to provide information to the investigators.
The terms of reference for the task team will be finalised through due legal processes. It is envisaged that the task team will be led by a retired judge or an independent education expert.
All the unions have agreed to cooperate with the investigation to root out the alleged practice and take strong action against those found to be involved. – SAnews.gov.za

South Africa and Mozambique are in talks regarding the strengthening of enforcement mechanisms to ensure rhino poaching is nipped in the bud.
As part of a draft Implementation Plan of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), fundraising projects to address the scourge of rhino poaching, have been discussed by both countries.
The implementation of the MoU in the field of Biodiversity Conservation and Management, which was signed last month, is expected to be finalised by the end of July 2014.
Other identified projects to assist with the implementation of the MoU include wildlife trafficking in general, community development issues and raise awareness about the plight of the rhino.
The meeting between the two neighbouring countries following the signing of the MoU, came as the number of rhino poached for their horn since the beginning of 2013 increased to 376.
A total of 106 people have been arrested for rhino poaching-related offences since January this year.
The Kruger National Park continues to bear the brunt of rhino poaching in South Africa, having lost 245 rhino so far.
The only province not affected by poaching this year has been the Northern Cape. A total of 39 rhino have been poached in Limpopo, 37 in KwaZulu-Natal and 26 in North West.
The governments of South Africa and Mozambique have agreed that the Ministers responsible for the implementation of the MoU will meet annually to discuss progress and identify areas for further cooperation and additional attention.
Among steps being taken by the two countries since June 2013 to address the menace of rhino poaching have included:
- Immediate maintenance and erection of fencing along the eastern boundary of Kruger National Park with Mozambique;
- Strengthening of the buffer zone in Mozambique through the establishment of the Greater Lubombo Conservancy;
- Creation of an intensive protection zone in the Limpopo National Park;
- Deploying a well-trained and armed anti-poaching unit for joint collaboration with the Kruger National Park team and the
- Synchronisation of operational plans between the Limpopo and Kruger National Parks.
South Africans are urged to report incidents of poaching and tip-offs to the anonymous tip-off lines 0800 205 005, 08600 10111 or Crime-Line on 32211. – SAnews.gov.za
