I've just gotten my grubby little paws on a extra computer which I want to experiment with...

Now I am going to start from scratch by partioning the hard disk(s) and then want to install Linux...

Question number 1 is, do I use M$ to partion it ?

Then when I've done that how do I format it ? Again M$ ??? Sad

And finally where do I get hold of Linux and how do I get it onto the new PC considering that no cd-rom drivers will be installed... ???

I used to be able to listen to SA radio stations, up to a few weeks ago. When I try to listen, my computer comes to a dead halt.
If I click on windows media player, I get a message about an internal application error that has occured. This even after I removed and re-installed windows media player.
Can anyone help..please?

  a time for chocolate
Posted by: whirlpool - 09-04-2004, 11:00 AM - Forum: Food Matters - Replies (9)

i just have to share this. i have always enjoyed icecream with hot chocolate sauce when i have gone out for a meal, in SA no problem but it does pose a challenge in the UK/Europe and one or two other places that i have been too. i had a really good chocolate sauce in a resturant once and i asked a chef once how he made it.
needless to say it is VERY fattening :wall: dont tell but i made it tonight and the kids came back for more...Rolleyes
anyway... simply take a bar one or mars bar and melt it in a double boiler, and thin it with cream once it has melted. the toffee in the mix quasi solidify's with the cold icecream and it is lekker. one bar per two people (is gready but you will regret it if you use less Wink )
enjoy!

this is a very very long shot (and i hope it is in the correct forum)
I am trying to contact a great uncle who has the family bible and nobody knows where he is.
SO here goes
Does anybody know the whereabouts of Guy Powel-Stevens or any living relatives He was born in 1916 so we do not know if he is still alive. we last had contact with him in 1978 at my grandfathers funeral in Durban (Raymond Stevens). at the time Guy was living in Gwelo, Rhodesia, he moved there in the 60's and we are not sure if they moved back to SA at a later point. he had five children, Lesley, Helen, Michael and cannot find the names of the other two. Guy used to work for Escom so we assume he was working on a Power station in Zim

IF anybody has the slightest lead it would really be great to hear from them.
As i said a very long shot
holding thumbs Wink

  Phishing con hijacks browser bar
Posted by: lols - 08-04-2004, 11:29 AM - Forum: Your Computers, Gadgets and Software - Replies (9)

Scammers are using increasingly sophisticated methods to trick people into handing over personal information.

The latest con uses a fake version of a web browser's address bar to hide a bogus site set up to collect Pin codes for cash machines.

The address bar stays in place and could be used to steal information about other sites too.

Security experts said users should be suspicious of any e-mail that asks them to verify confidential information.

Scam spotting

So-called phishing cons have become increasingly common recently among tech-savvy criminals keen to steal cash from gullible users by making them hand over sign on or account details.

Most phishing attacks involve an e-mail that purports to be sent out by a legitimate organisation, such as a bank, that asks users to enter information on a special site.

Anyone following the instructions will unwittingly be handing over details to conmen who use them to empty the account of cash.

Often the fake websites are difficult to spot because they do a good job of reproducing the website of the company they are impersonating.

Now the Anti-Phishing Working Group has come across an even more sophisticated attack that targets Citibank customers.

When users visit click on the web link in the e-mail of this latest attack, the site they are taken to detects what browser they are using, suppresses the real address bar and generates a fake one to take its place.

This fake browser bar shows the real web address of the firm being impersonated rather than the address of the scam site the user is actually visiting.

"The biggest problem you have when trying to fool people is what appears in the address bar of the browser," said Dave Brunswick, technical director at Tumbleweed and a member of the APWG.

But, he said, this attack removes that problem.

The address bar even acts like a real part of the browser and will direct net users to other website addresses that are typed into it.

The website also fakes the appearance of the webpage code used to create it to make it look more convincing.

One of the few clues that it is a fake is the fact that it does not show a locked padlock icon for the supposedly secure web-browsing session it is supporting.

The grammar and style of the original e-mail is also slightly suspect.

Mr Brunswick advised people to be suspicious of any e-mail message that asked users to supply key login or personal information.

"The idea is to be cynical and ask: 'Why would my bank be sending me this e-mail?'" he said.

There were 60% more phishing attacks in February than January according to the APWG.

  Afrikaans music in the UK
Posted by: picanin - 08-04-2004, 01:41 AM - Forum: Your Music - Replies (4)

I have just taken a look at various websites in the UK selling SA music and video. 99.9% of all the music being sold is by black performers. Now I know it is ultra cool for loads of Saffers to pull out the Brenda Fasi or Lucky Dube CD's to prove their non racist credentials. However surely there is a market for other SA music in the UK even if just on a small scale?
