Sue Johnson to share cancer experience
Thank you everyone for your kind words of support. I am sorry that I have not responded earlier.

Having lost mum and then six weeks later, Taryn, it has been a really difficult time to begin picking up pieces and getting on with life. As a mother, much of my own grief has been watching my son see his wife in intensive care and then high care only to be rushed to critical care and placed on life support machines. The feeling of helplessness is overwhelming as you watch the scenes play out. Constant text messages from the hospital with any small signs of improvement. Holding Taryn’s hand urging her to stay strong only to witness the life slowly ebbing away.

Losing a loved one at any time is hard, losing a child is totally unthinkable but it happens, I cannot even begin to image the pain Taryn’s family are going through. They say time heals but I don’t think parents ever get over the loss of a child. I have watched as my son breaks his heart over photographs and personal possessions and there is nothing I can do but put an arm around his shoulder in comfort.

Now we have days where we can laugh and talk about some of the past times and we have other times when a small thing happens and everyone is reduced to floods of tears once more. My son is getting slowly used to life as a widower at 31 years of age. People say he will find some one else, he will love again but we know that he will never find the ‘soul mate’ he had in Taryn. In time, he will love again, I am sure, but it will be different.

I will be very happy to see the back of 2008! I think this has been the worst year of my life.

So our families face Christmas with a feeling of sadness. I will be leaving for the UK on the 17th and am looking forward to seeing family once more but I know this year will be hard for everyone.

I hope all your plans are going well and that you are not too stressed. Taryn’s passing has given each of us the gift of really understanding what is important in life and it is not to be found in any shop or store, not in the festivities and parties. It is to be found by sharing good times with those we love. It is to be found in sharing the wonder of eternal life and understanding that we are all here for such a short time…..don’t sweat the small stuff, tell your loved ones how much you love them and show it whilst you can!
