{"id":107,"date":"2011-07-19T11:02:42","date_gmt":"2011-07-19T11:02:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/?p=107"},"modified":"2011-07-21T15:26:22","modified_gmt":"2011-07-21T15:26:22","slug":"where-to-find-zebras-and-more-in-pretoria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/2011\/07\/19\/where-to-find-zebras-and-more-in-pretoria\/","title":{"rendered":"Where to find zebras (and more!) in Pretoria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A scheme to provide employment to many otherwise unemployed people during the Great Depression of the late 1920s has developed into a wonderful nature reserve where zebras, birds, buck and vegetation abound in peace.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/files\/2011\/07\/201000305-085-e1311240621197.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-108\" title=\"201000305 085\" src=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/files\/2011\/07\/201000305-085-e1311240621197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Rietvlei Dam Nature Reserve to the east of Pretoria was originally a farm called Riet Vallei (Reedy Valley) which was boght by the Pretoria City Council with the idea of creaating a dam on the Ses Myl Spruit (Six Mile Stream) to augmnet the city&#8217;s water supply.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/files\/2011\/07\/20100228-007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-109\" src=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/files\/2011\/07\/20100228-007.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"588\" height=\"279\" \/><\/a>To provide employment the dam wall was built by hand by a large number of people. It was completed in 1934. The dam now provides great sailing and fishing.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_110\" style=\"width: 611px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/files\/2011\/07\/201000305-004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110\" class=\"size-full wp-image-110 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/files\/2011\/07\/201000305-004.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"513\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-110\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An egret, holding a frog in its beak, sits on the back of a rhino.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The nature reserve was declared in 1937, at which time it had small herds of small buck like Springbok, oribi, grey duiker, steenbok and mountain reedbuck.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_111\" style=\"width: 628px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/files\/2011\/07\/201000305-016.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111\" class=\"size-full wp-image-111  \" src=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/files\/2011\/07\/201000305-016.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-111\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A long tailed widow bird in the grass<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 1948 the reserve was also declared a reserve for indigenous flora. It was then known as the Rietvlei Reserve for Game and Indigenous Flora.
