{"id":93,"date":"2011-07-18T11:00:12","date_gmt":"2011-07-18T11:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/?p=93"},"modified":"2011-07-21T15:25:13","modified_gmt":"2011-07-21T15:25:13","slug":"the-union-buildings-in-pretoria-summing-up-an-architecural-era","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/2011\/07\/18\/the-union-buildings-in-pretoria-summing-up-an-architecural-era\/","title":{"rendered":"The Union Buildings in Pretoria &#8211; summing up an architectural era"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"The Union Buildings from the foot of Meintjies Kop.\" src=\"files\/2011\/07\/Jacarandas-201009-007.jpg\" alt=\"The Union Buildings from the foot of Meintjies Kop.\" width=\"587\" height=\"282\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Union Buildings from the foot of Meintjies Kop.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After the dreadful sufferings of the people of Southern Africa in the Anglo-Boer War of 1899 to 1902 there was widespread support for the unification of the four British colonies which had been involved in the conflict &#8211; the Cape Colony, Natal, the Orange River Colony (formerly the Orange Free State Republic) and the Transvaal Colony (formerly the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek).<\/p>\n<p>Movement towards unification was speeded up by the calling, mostly at Jan Smuts&#8217;s insistence, of the National Convention which sat from 1908 to 1910.<\/p>\n<p>When it became clear that Unification was almost certain, the search for a suitable capital and an appropriate building to symbolize the unified nation, Pretoria was settled on as the administrative capital while Cape Town was given the legsilature of the new country.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_95\" style=\"width: 605px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/files\/2011\/07\/Jacarandas-201009-019.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95\" class=\"size-full wp-image-95   \" src=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/files\/2011\/07\/Jacarandas-201009-019.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"595\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-95\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Union Buildings from the other side of the valley<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An architect who had made quite a name for himself in South Africa, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Herbert_Baker\">Herbert (later Sir Herbert) Baker<\/a>, was given the commission to design the building and a site on Pretoria&#8217;s Meintjies Kop was decided on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"    \" title=\"Looking up at the East Wing of the Union Buildings.\" src=\"files\/2011\/07\/Jacarandas-201009-011.jpg\" alt=\"Looking up at the East Wing of the Union Buildings.\" width=\"587\" height=\"351\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Looking up at the East Wing of the Union Buildings.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Baker, who would later go on to collaborate with Edwin Lutyens in designing the capital of India in New Delhi, was an almost exact contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright, and, as Desir\u00e9e Seymour-Picton wrote in her excellent book <em>Historical Buildings in South Africa <\/em>(Struikhof, 1989): &#8220;Wright was the innovator, Baker the apotheosis of an era, a dying era.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_97\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/files\/2011\/07\/Jacarandas-201009-014-e1311241052354.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97\" class=\"size-full wp-image-97 \" title=\"Jacarandas 201009 014\" src=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/files\/2011\/07\/Jacarandas-201009-014-e1311241052354.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-97\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The statue of former Prime Minister J.B.M. Hertzog in the gardens of the Union Buildings<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Baker designed a building which, in its breadth and classical lines, would symbolise the reconciliation and inclusiveness (at least of the two white language groups, English and Afrikaans) that was the hope of the unifiers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/files\/2011\/07\/Jacarandas-201009-010-e1311241021605.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-98\" title=\"Jacarandas 201009 010\" src=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/files\/2011\/07\/Jacarandas-201009-010-e1311241021605.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"840\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Union_Buildings\">Union Buildings<\/a> occupy the lovely position on Meintjies Kop with grace and grandeur. The two domed towers on the two wings of the sweeping building represent the two language groups, while the curved colonade represents the unifying constitution which guaranteed a place for each language in the new country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/files\/2011\/07\/Jacarandas-201009-015-e1311240742816.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105\" title=\"Jacarandas 201009 015\" src=\"http:\/\/www.globalbuzz-sa.com\/mcgregorza\/files\/2011\/07\/Jacarandas-201009-015-e1311240742816.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The building process took three years and was completed by 1265 workers at a cost of \u00a31,310,640. Because of the design each stone had to be individually dressed.
