  Registration for remarking closes today
Posted by: Newsroom - 21-01-2014, 08:21 AM - Forum: Your Education - No Replies

Learners, who are not satisfied with their subject results for the National Senior Certificate, have until 21 January to register for a re-marking, re-checking or viewing of the script.

According to the Department of Basic Education, application forms for re-checking and re-marking are available at the schools and centres where the candidates sat for their exams as well at district offices.

The fees are R79 for re-marking, R16 for re-checking and R157 for viewing a re-checked or re-marked examination script.

“Candidates from no-fee schools and learners, whose parents have applied and have been granted a concession on the payment of schools fees are exempted from payment of re-marking and rechecking fees,” says the department.

Candidates who did not meet the minimum requirements but need as many as two subjects to obtain a National Senior Certificate may sit for supplementary examinations.

This also applies to candidates who are one requirement short for admission to higher education studies.

They may also qualify if they could not sit or finish the exams due to medical reasons, a death in the family or other special causes. Evidence documenting the reasons will be needed.

Learners will be able to register to write the supplementary examinations by applying at their schools or centres where they sat, by 24 January 2014.

The 2014 NSC Supplementary Examinations commences on 17 February 2014 and ends on 25 March 2014.

If results were withheld, learners should contact the provincial head office or district office to establish the reasons for the withholding of the results. – SAnews.gov.za

S Africans called to 'live lightly'
Posted by: Newsroom - 21-01-2014, 08:20 AM - Forum: Your Environment - No Replies

Eskom has called on all South Africans to pull together over the next few months and use electricity sparingly by “Living Lightly” this summer as it continues its planned maintenance on generating units.

“The power system will remain tight until new generating capacity comes on stream and essential generation maintenance is done. Eskom calls on all electricity consumers to reduce their electricity usage as we move further into summer and continue with planned maintenance on the generating units,” said the utility in an update of the state of the power system on Monday.

Eskom said that the demand forecast and supply situation was looking better this week than last week.

“We have seen a few generating units that were out for maintenance coming back on line, thus relieving some pressure from the power system. Our request for our customers to keep demand as low as possible remains, in order to ensure that we continue with planned maintenance and have enough spare capacity in case of unplanned events.”

South Africans are urged to switch off geysers and pool pumps; switch off non-essential lights; efficient use of air-conditioners and responding to TV alerts to reduce electricity usage.

Peak demand for the rest of this week is forecast at: 30 869 MW on Tuesday, 30 783 MW on Wednesday, 30 718 MW on Thursday, 30 248 MW on Friday, 28 955 MW on Saturday and 28 538 MW on Sunday.

Eskom continues to make progress with its programme of planned maintenance but the system remains tight. - SAnews.gov.za

Untagged motorists urged to pay e-toll bills
Posted by: Newsroom - 20-01-2014, 08:10 AM - Forum: Your Motoring - No Replies

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) says motorists without e-tags should pay their e-toll bills at the earliest opportunity to avoid losing out on their discounts.

SANRAL communications manager Vusi Mona said almost one million registered motorists qualify for the monthly e-toll bill cap.

“When you register your vehicle and obtain an e-tag, you enjoy the benefit of a 48% discount and other discounts such as time of day and frequent user discounts. The maximum amount that you can be charged for a Class A2 vehicle is R450 per month.

“However, when you do not have an e-tag, you do not get all these benefits and if you do not pay within the stipulated seven days, there is an additional cost, which could be three times the standard tariff, incurred,” he said.

Mona said non-registered users, who pay before certain cut-off dates, will receive discounts on their e-toll bills.

He said a road user, who has not paid within the seven days grace period from the date of first gantry pass, will qualify for a 60% discount on the invoice amount if s/he pays within 30 days of the invoice date.

Mona reiterated that the courts have declared the e-toll system lawful. “SANRAL has always been upfront about the toll tariff structure. There is the e-tag tariff (paid by registered e-tag users), the standard tariff (for road users who are not registered, but pay within the 7 days grace period) and the alternate user tariff (paid by road users after expiry of the 7 days grace period),” he said.

According to Mona, the fee collection process can be divided into three stages: the seven day grace period, the debt collection process by the Violations Processing Centre and the prosecution using the Criminal Procedure Act.

The last stage kicks in after there has been no cooperation from the road user following SANRAL’s final letter of demand.

“It is unfortunate that there are some who have been encouraging road users not to obtain e-tags, which is their right, but such road users are now saddled with huge amounts of outstanding toll fees because they have neither e-tagged nor paid within the 7 days grace period. Clearly, those who advised road users not to get e-tags must take responsibility.

“Getting an e-tag is the way to go. It is just the easier and cheaper way. If you’re not registered, pay within seven days and the discounts will kick in and you will not get SMS reminders from SANRAL,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

Does Wittgenstein offer a talking cure for philosophers?

Wittgenstein often emphasised the difference between his way of doing philosophy and traditional approaches – indeed, he sometimes suggests that what he does should be seen as a successor activity to philosophy. Partly, this is about giving up a certain kind of ambition – the later Wittgenstein is not aiming to discover deep truths about [...]Does Wittgenstein offer a talking cure for philosophers? is a post from: Wittgenstein and Freud

President Jacob Zuma has arrived in Luanda, Angola, for the 5th Ordinary Summit of the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), which gets underway today.

Peace and stability in the Great Lakes Region will top the agenda, with an acute focus on the renewed conflict in Africa’s newest state South Sudan; the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic (CAR), as well as discussions on development issues in the region.

The meeting of the regional leaders -- which include incoming chair Angola, Burundi, CAR, Congo, DRC, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia -- precedes the African Union summit to be held in Addis Ababa next week.

South Africa has been leading peace efforts in the region and the continent, and remains committed to working with the United Nations (UN), AU, Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the ICGLR in addressing national reconciliation; post-conflict reconstruction and development; security sector reform; disarmament; demobilisation and re-integration; as well as institutional capacity-building and economic development in the region. – SAnews.gov.za
