Durban waters will be a hive of activity with a variety of classes taking to the warm Indian Ocean. Three classes will be sailed over the four day event: the 2011 Hobie 16 KZN Provincials, the L26 KZN Provincials and the Open Class Keel Boat Regatta.
The L26 KZN Provincials will have the best of the L26 sailors competing, with competitors coming from around the country to pit their skills ahead of the esteemed annual Lipton Challenge Cup Regatta that takes place in Mossel Bay in August.

24 year old Ricky Robinson, who skippered RNYC’s Ciao Bello to an impressive second place in the Heineken Cape to Rio race earlier this year, will be helming the fast-paced Orion B2G2 in the L26 KZN Provincials. This will be the first race for Royal Natal Yacht Club’s Lipton Challenge Cup campaign. The unchanged youthful team who came third in the most prestigious yachting event in South Africa last year aims to better their bronze and bring the 2012 event to our shores.

A confident Robinson exclaimed, “We are extremely determined this year, having gotten so close to victory in the Lipton last year. Durban sailing conditions suit our team well as we have start our training for our big upcoming regatta.”

The brightly coloured Hobie 16’s will launch from the beach site, attacking a different course to the L26 boats but remaining in the same sailing area. The zippy 16ft Hobie Cats have two crewmembers tossing the boat around providing high speed action with loads of thrills and spills as they manoeuvre tightly around a variety of courses set by the race officer. Well-known sailor, Sean Fennessy from Durban North, who is the current KZN Halcat Provincial Champion, will be the boat to beat as he sails in his favourite class.

The Open Class Keel Boat race will provide challenges with the race officer setting courses where they will need to navigate around a number of buoys and then test their tactical skills in a couple of long distance races.

All the divisions will sail a maximum of two races a day with the race officer setting a course depending on the sea and wind conditions to suit the boat classes.

The unofficial long weekend will have South African sailors in a competitive mood as they take on Royal Natal Yacht Club’s Trio Regatta from 16 – 19 June offshore of Durban.
