Support for ASA 21km championships

Stephen Mokoka

WPARR would like to appeal to clubs and members to support the ASA Half Marathon Championship that takes place this coming Sunday 26th August.

This is the first inter-provincial road running championship WP has hosted for several years.

Championship races are typically lonely runs for the athletes and we would like show that WP appreciates seeing the best runners in the country battle it out !

Stephen Mokoka will be defending his title while other top names will include the 2010 winner Lucky Mohale, SA 10km Champion Elroy Gelant, Coolboy Ngamole, Boy Soke, Gladwin Mzazi, Kgosi Tsosane, Lusapho April and the SA Marathon record holder Gert Thys.

Perhaps plan your Sunday run in Constantia !?

The race starts at 07h00 and is restricted to provincial runners or individuals entered through their province. (Entries are now closed). There will be about 300 athletes from all over the country.

The start and finish venue is the Academy for Mathematics and Science in Constantia (previously called the Constantia School for Boys), the same venue as used for the Lion of Africa Half Marathon, in Firgrove Road.

The route is a two-lapper. A map of the first lap is attached.

Start in Firgrove facing the mountain then right into Spaanschemat. Turn right into Willow then into Strawberry Lane. Re-join Spaanschemat at Peddlars then go up the hill to turn right into Ladies Mile.

All the way down Ladies Mile, past the roundabout, eventually turn right into Children’s Way. Right into Dreyersdal and back up the hill to Firgrove where they turn left and return to the start/finish at 10km.

The second lap is generally the same except turns earlier off Ladies Mile into Dreyersdal.

Jacobs Kronung will have their promotions van at the Start where you can get a complementary cup of coffee to keep you warm.

Thank you to all the clubs that are assisting at the event.

Best of luck to the WPA team.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Two Oceans attracts international runners

Two Oceans

Two Oceans

The Old Mutual Two Oceans has been confirmed as a world leading event attracting 1500 international visitors.

34% are novices which indicates a resurgence in ultra marathons.

The 56 km field of 9200 is the 2nd largest with all 10 of last year’s gold medalists in the men’s racing returning.
Contenders outside of this experienced group include Michael Mazibukon, of Team Toyota, who was 16 th last year but boasts a silver at the recent SA Marathon champs in 2:15.12.

Novices with the pedigree to challenge for honours include Shadrack Hoff, who this morning felt cold symptoms, and Odwa Tunyiswa, also of Nedbank Running Club, who won last year’s 50 km City-to-city.

Following last year’s PB 4 th place Stephen Muzhingi, representing Formula 1 Bluff Meats, has set his sights on adding this title to his last 3 Comrades.

Whoever wins will have to be at their best in this competitive race and the likelihood of rain.

The women’s event looks a formality for Elena Nurgalieva after the disppointing withdrawal of her twin Oleysa who won last year.

The performance of American novice Devon Crosby-Helms will be monitored as she has a chance of breaking the American 50 km record.
Officials have confirmed that mats will capture this time.
She has trained for 2 months in wet San Franciscan conditions and with a marathon PB of 2:38.55 she is one of the faster ladies and this 3:13.50 target  is realistic should all go well for her on raceday.

Gwen van Lingen, 2001 winner, returns to accompany her sister and is aiming for a 4:30-4:40.

In winning in 2002, Natalia Volgina from Russia, recorded the 3 rd fastest ever time but is not expected to repeat this performance on her returns since 2003.

Of great public interest and support will be the debut of national treasure, Olympian Zola Budd-Pieterse, in the 40-49 category.

Another instantly recognizable face will be Gary Kirsten, the indian cricket World Cup winning hero and now Proteas coach.

The Half Marathon started in 1998 with 3600 entrants but has increased by virtually that number on last year as 16 266 entries have been received.

Top Province Athletes for Bellville

Track Sprinters

Track Sprinters

Some of Western Provinces, as well as the country’s, top track and field athletes will be in action at the final leg of the Yellow Pages Interprovincial Series, which takes place at the Bellville Stadium this Saturday 3 March.

Western Province is lying second on the points table behind Gauteng North so good performances at this weekend’s meeting could see them move to top of the table.  Gauteng North’s 100m sprinters Cherese Jones and Carina Horn, as well as a double by Wenda Theron in the 400m and 400m hurdles at last weekend’s meeting in Germiston, saw Gauteng North take first place in the series.

African junior champion, Rocco van Rooyen, will be hoping to repeat his win in the javelin (69.04m) in front of a home crowd, with the province’s relay team of Samantha Pretorius, Siobhan Loots, Stacey Welsh and Bernice Roman planning to improve on their winning time of 47.60.

Sonja van der Merwe placed second in last weekend’s 200m and was fourth in the 400m behind three upcountry runners Wenda Theron (Gauteng North), Eugenie Wicksell (USSA) and rival Anneri Ebersohn (Gauteng North).  Overall winner and runner to watch is Tsholofelo Thipe from Athletics North West North.

Local lass and top athlete Zintle Xiniwe won the 5 000m by 6 seconds last weekend and is the province’s best middle and long distance athlete on the track.  The Western Province women’s 4 x 100m relay team took first place last weekend so will be looking for another win this weekend.

Young 400m hurdler, Taariq Solomons, joins the WP team having started his season on 21 February with a time of 52.59, and will be hoping to move closer to his 2011 personal best of 51.39.

The men’s 4 x 100m relay team will have their honour to defend, as they did not finish last weekend’s relay and as a result lost points, so will be out to prove a point.

Triple jumper Jason Sewanyana is the only athlete from the coast competing this weekend, with Keenan Watson and Roelf Pienaar (Boland) taking on Zark Visser who is jumping close to 8m in the long jump and the one to watch.

This meeting provides athletes with another opportunity to run faster, jump higher and throw further with the London Olympic qualifying standards high on their agendas.

Gates open at 11h30, and the main programme gets underway at 13h00.  Tickets are available at the gate at R20 for adults and R10 for children.
