I Am Woman Leap of Faith
Just when you thought the commissioning of local programming by the SABC had come to an (almost) grinding halt – a new series has just leapt onto the small screen.
I Am Woman Leap of Faith, a new weekly series which launched on SABC3 on April 1st 2012, offers a fresh take of the life journeys and leaps of faith of 26 South African Women. Exploring defining moments in the women’s lives, the series investigates what life throws at women and they and the significant others in their lives we handle. ‘It’s a deep and very moving exploration of the whole thing’, says show host Lisa Chait, ‘There are moments of great poignancy and much laugher too’. The series also explores where women go to for spiritual sustenance when the chips are down. It was commissioned by the SABC without an attached sponsor.
Producers Lauren Groenewald and Miki Redelinghuys from Plexus Films (www.plexusfilms.co.za) were approached by Chait, a former radio talk show host and founder of the Life Stories Project (www.lifestories.co.za) at the end of 2009. Plexus then nurtured the project through a long period of stop-starts until it was finally commissioned by SABC Religion in late 2011.
Groenewald says, ‘This is not just about profiling women with interesting stories, its about finding and exploring a defining moment of change in their lives. Women have been so generous with their time and stories, many of which are very personal’.
In the series Lisa discovers that by choice or force of circumstance these courageous, inspirational and ordinary women have learnt profound lessons and radically changed their lives along the way. They share how they’ve made bold decisions and determined their futures based on very interesting shifts in their inner and outer worlds. The series bears witness to these transformations most of which were unplanned.
Shot documentary style, each 24 minute episode features one woman’s story punctuated by a rich and layered leap of faith.
The ‘stars’ of the series are a broad and eclectic bunch of women with one shared characteristic: They have all experienced a profound moment when they knew for sure that things would never be the same again. Full episodes will be loaded onto the series website two weeks after their broadcast date.
