Gun Run celebrates 20 years
Cape Town, Sunday 14 October. The OUTsurance 94.5 Kfm Gun Run celebrated its twentieth birthday with a record field of just over 15 000 participants (15 309), and has become one of Cape Town’s biggest annual events.
The event has huge support from the people of the Western Cape, local dignitaries, sports stars and media personalities. Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Patricia De Lille, started the half marathon by firing the Cape Field Artillery 4-pounder gun at 07h00 and local Springbok Bryan Habana fired the cut-off gun at 10h30.
Others chose to enter the race like television personality Michael Mol with his son Joshua and 94.5Kfm presenters Elana Afrika and Keri Miller who completed the 5km and 10km races respectively.
This year’s half marathon winner Xolisa Tyali from Gauteng finished in 1:03:41, one second faster than the very first winner 20 years ago. Bulelwa Simae won the women’s race in 1:21:28. Gladwin Mzazi won the 10km in 29:08, with the top three men finishing in under 30 minutes. There were a small group of runners who have participated every year since the very first race back in 1993 and earned their permanent number for completing all 20.
This year the event chose to support the JAG Foundation and raised R60 000 for the charity through runners, OUTsurance, 94.5 Kfm and Atlantic Athletic Club. The Western Cape, in particular, is in a crisis from alcohol and drug abuse within poorer communities and this contribution will ensure that JAG Foundation’s positive work continues.
